Bio

Dr Ryan Thwaites is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Respiratory Immunology within the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. Ryan’s work focusses on the immune response to viral infections in the human airway mucosa. This has included observational studies of natural infections in infants and adults, alongside controlled human infection model (CHIM) studies with viruses including RSV and SARS-CoV-2. After establishing his independent research group, Ryan has sought to identify features of the mucosal immune response that drive immunopathology during severe respiratory viral infections, and to determine the contribution of mucosal immunity to protection from infection.
