Joyce Nyiro

Bio

Joyce Nyiro is an epidemiologist and a post-doctoral scientist at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Tropical Infectious Diseases from the University of Nairobi, Kenya and was recently appointed to serve as a committee member for KEMRI Scientific and Ethics Review Unit in Kenya.

Her research interest focuses on prevention and control of common infectious diseases in children and infants in low resource settings where access to treatment or affordable medical care is limited. Joyce research work mainly specializes on viruses causing respiratory infections where she has been conducting surveillance of respiratory illnesses within the community and setting up of laboratory diagnostic assays. For the last 13 years, Joyce has also been involved in multi-site collaborative research projects on Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) which have explored; RSV transmission dynamics, age-specific seroprevalence, RSV disease and economic burden and the correlates of immune response. In preparation for introduction of RSV interventions, Joyce has led cross-sectional surveys among pregnant women in three counties in Kenya, to assess factors likely to influence the successful implementation of a maternal RSV vaccine. Joyce is currently a Co-Principal investigator for a multicountry feasibility study to assess site capability for a phase IV trial of a maternal RSV vaccine. Joyce has over 20 publications and she is a supervisor to post graduate and Master of Science students.
